Originating as Decoration Day in 1868, Memorial Day is an American holiday, honoring members of the armed forces who died while serving.
Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, who headed an organization of Union Veterans, established Decoration Day in 1868 as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Civil War dead with flowers. After World War I, the holiday was broadened to include service members who died in all of the country's wars, not just the Civil War.
1.1 million Americans have died in the nation's wars.
Across the nation, I'm encouraged by programs that reflect pride and support of our veterans. One such program in Georgia is the Vietnam War Certificate of Honor program with the goal of honoring every one of Georgia's 234,000 Vietnam War veterans. Another program is Carroll County Housing Authority's Department of Housing and Urban Development Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, which helps eligible homeless military Veterans secure and maintain decent, stable, and affordable housing.
On behalf of the team at Fenix Risk Management, we are honored and humbled to be fellow Americans with fallen warriors who have given us the opportunity and freedom we have today.
We remember and thank those who gave their lives in serving our country's armed forces.
The Georgia Department of Veterans Service serves Georgia's 752,000-plus veterans and their families in all matters pertaining to veterans benefits.
